Love Bites
A prequel of sorts to Sands's paranormal comedy, Single White Vampire, this lightweight romantic romp shoots for the easy laugh and often misses. The allure of vampires lies in their strength and seeming invulnerability, but Etienne Argeneau, this book's bloodsucking hero, is curiously incompetent when it comes to dispatching a crazed mortal named Pudge who's intent on lopping his head off. Twice, Pudge manages to injure Etienne to the point where he ends up in the morgue under coroner Rachel Garrett's care. But when Rachel gets in the way of attempt number three, Etienne rescues her in the only way he knows how-by turning her into a vampire.

The story moves from mildly amusing to ridiculous when Rachel, in denial, insists that she's merely having a "wet dream" involving a sexy man who thinks he's a vampire. There's little tension between Etienne and Rachel, sexual or otherwise. Instead, Sands stretches the plot with conflicts stemming from minor misunderstandings. Her attempts at hip dialogue also fall flat (at one point, a 200-year-old vampire compliments Rachel by saying, "You're a happening chick, dudette!").

Those who enjoyed Sands's previous paranormal comedy of errors may eke a little enjoyment from these pages, but this isn't something vampire fans will want to sink their teeth into. The second in Sands' deliciously sexy comedic series featuring the charismatic Argeneau clan (following Single White Vampire [BKL S 15 03] ) is a delight. This time the focus is on Etienne, a successful computer game designer who has become the target of a homicidal maniac called Pudge.

The first time Etienne sees Dr. Rachel Garrett, it's in the hospital morgue where she removes a bullet from his apparently stilled heart. She doesn't recognize him when he is brought in again a week later as a charred corpse. Astounded to find a heart beat, she shields her "patient" from an axe-wielding Pudge, who attacks her instead. When Rachel regains consciousness, she discovers that Etienne has made her into a vampire to save her life. Rachel has to stay with Etienne to learn to control her teeth and drink blood, which she finds extremely unpalatable. Add one sexy cousin and a page-turning climax, and readers will be highly amused, very satisfied, and eager for the next Argeneau tale.

Single White Vampire

Readers weary of the tortured, brooding, all-too-serious vampires that often populate paranormal romance novels will appreciate Sands's (The Loving Daylights, etc.) cheeky, madcap tale about an immortal who finds eternal happiness with his editor.

Reclusive Lucern Argeneau, a family biographer who has been classified as a paranormal romance author, is stunned when Kate C. Leever, his new editor at Roundhouse Publishing (read: Dorchester), shows up on his doorstep demanding he make a public appearance to appease his fans.

After some urging from the beguiling Kate, he agrees to go to the Romantic Times convention, little knowing that he'll have to contend with adoring fans and a week full of parties and signings.
Some of the plot twists verge on the absurd-such as when Luc's codpiece sticks to a tablecloth at a Renaissance ball, or when Kate fells an attacker with a pillow-and Kate's reluctance to admit her feelings for Luc because she assumes she's "just supper" to him is aggravating. Still, vampire lovers will find themselves laughing throughout.

A Bite to Remember
Vincent Argeneau, cousin of the Canadian Argeneaus from Single White Vampire (2003) and Love Bites (2004), has had to shut down all his stage productions because a saboteur's actions are escalating, and he fears that someone will be killed.

Cast members have been injured and others are quitting, and everyone acting in a New York production has come down with anemia. Bastien Argeneau sends PI Jackie Morrisey and her assistant, Tiny McGraw, to help. Jackie, who previously had a bad relationship with a vampire, has no personal interest in Vincent but realizes that he is in danger.

Vincent discovers that Jackie is his lifemate but knows that she has an antipathy toward immortals. When Jackie is captured by the saboteur, she bites her vampire assailant's wrist and accidentally swallows blood, thus beginning the transformation to immortal. This enjoyable combination of mystery, paranormal fantasy, and romance will appeal to readers who relish cozy vampire stories featuring characters with a true nobility of spirit.

Bite Me If You Can
One minute Leigh is walking home in the early hours of the morning, and the next a vampire is sinking his teeth into her neck. Turns out it was a rogue vampire marked for termination, but it does Leigh little good because the damage's already been done. She's become one of them

Lucian Argeneau, hunter of rogue vampires, has been alive for over two thousand years, and there's very little to excite him anymore. Food has become tasteless, sex is ordinary. Then Leigh drops into his life. Suddenly he finds himself craving coffee . . . and imagining the sassy brunette atop the black satin sheets on his nice big bed. It's Lucian's job now to enlighten Leigh on the inner workings of being immortal . . . and tutoring her is igniting a fire in him that hasn't burned in centuries.

But until they stop a renegade bloodsucker from destroying the human race, passion will have to wait!

Sands's delightful sixth visit with the Argeneaus (following A Bite to Remember), a clan of vampires living across present-day North America, features bitter, world-weary Lucian, a bloodsucker preoccupied with hunting down rogue vamps to protect the family—and to hide centuries-old grief for his dead wife and children. The depressed vampire finds a new lease on immortality when he becomes involved with Leigh Gerard, an independent woman fleeing an abusive relationship and looking to make a fresh start in Kansas City. After Leigh is attacked and turned by a wayward vampire named Morgan, Lucian becomes her unwilling tutor in the vampiric lifestyle.

When he realizes he's falling in love with her, he has to figure out how to become the kind of man she could fall in love with as well—the kind of man he used to be. Though Sands doesn't have much of an antagonist in Morgan, her trademark humor and genuine characters easily carry the romance, and she's able to work in some creative twists on the standard vampire legend, keeping her series fresh and her readers hooked.

Download I Dared to Call Him Father: The Miraculous Story of a Muslim Woman's Encounter with God

I Dared to Call Him Father
I Dared to Call Him Father is the fascinating true story of Bilquis Sheikh, a prominent Muslim woman. Her unusual journey to a personal relationship with God turned her world upside down-and put her life in danger. Originally published in 1978, the book has sold 300,000 copies and is a classic in Muslim evangelism. The 25th anniversary edition includes an afterword by a missionary friend of Bilquis who plays a prominent role in the story and an appendix on how the East enriches the West.

Bilquis Sheikh was a traditional Muslim woman living in Pakistan during the 1960s. At the age of 52, after discontent with life she began examining the Koran in more depth to try to find greater purpose and hope for life. During her search, she noticed the prophet Jesus mentioned within the Koran and thought perhaps reading more on his teachings would be interesting.

As one who came from a well respected and wealthy family, she had many resources and servants at her beckon. She instructed one of the servants to obtain a Bible for her and began to read it. Though it was in a difficult to understand version of the Urdu language, she became intrigued and had a couple dreams relating to John the Baptist and Jesus. She had not read about John prior to her dreams. The dreams struct her so vividly that she had to learn more and so cautiously approached a local Christian missionary.

Over the next weeks and months, God revealed to her that the Jesus of the Bible was the true message of hope for life. She struggled tremendously with the decision to follow this Jesus of an aberrant religion and the implications of intense persecution/ostracization that she would experience if turning to Christ. However, she was continuously brought back to being at peace when dwelling on the things of the Bible and when she talked with God as if He were her father. She eventually surrendered to God and placed her full faith in Him and the promises of the Bible.

The resulting persecution was very real both emotionally, materially, and socially. However, God grew her faith and continuously taught her and utilized her testimony for His glory throughout the rest of her life. This book provides good insight into Muslim society and the meaning of accepting Christ in that society. Not only is it a good read but also a true story.

The Funniest Tales of Mullah Nasruddin
On one occasion, Mullah Nasruddin is about to fall into a pond, but is saved in the nick of the moment by a passer-by. However, this turns out to be a bane of his life, as his saviour keeps reminding him of the favour he has done him. Harassed beyond endurance, the Mullah finally rids himself of the obligation in his own, inimitable fashion – by taking him to the pool and jumping into it in full public view, and then calling out to him, “I’m now as wet as I would have been if you had not saved me (that day)…now just leave me alone!”

This is just one of the collection of 140 hilarious, though thought-provoking tales of the highly popular trickster, Mullah Nasruddin (Nasruddin Hodja), collected and retold by journalist Clifford Sawhney. The lively Nasruddin dons diverse roles in these tales – while he is the wise man in some, he appears as a fool in others, he also features alternately as prankster and a victim!

Most of the stories are the popular ones that can be found on the Internet. They read more like anecdotes or Internet jokes rather than authentic Hodja stories, as some of them feature characters like the Pope and Rabbi Mashe apart from Nasruddin. The usage of the Hindi/ Urdu expressions for a Turkish character (Mullah) raises doubts about the extent of research done by the author. He has given his own interpretation as a post-script to each tale.

Download : Naya Nagar Basa Liya Hum Ne

Naya Nagar Basa Liya Hum Ne
Naya Nagar Basa Liya Hum Ne (نیا نگر بسا لیا ہم نے) is Qaiser Saleem’s (قیصر سلیم) ninth novel. The printed novel is 176 pages long. Kindle edition is 201 pages long. The author belongs to the class of storywriters who are able to simultaneously express traditionalism and modernism and this novel also possesses these virtues. This story is fictional but the characters and the settings are so realistic that it feels like a true story. All the characters are deeply engraved in their roles that a slight deviation from their roles would make this story lifeless. The central character of this story is a singer named Naila Aymen. The writer has described her role in such details that it is only possible with great knowledge of music and life of a stage performer. Without such knowledge it is impossible to do justification with the character and the role of Naila Aymen in this story. The singer’s story is one of love and revolves around two families. When Naila sees her childhood friend Kaifee Kiyani after ages, she falls in love and unrobes her self-erected persona…. The dialogues delivered by Mariam, Kaifee Kiyani, and Fakhera opens up many layers and colors. Subtly through these characters, the story of Pakistan is told and then through them an exemplary Pakistan is envisioned.

As the name of this novel suggests that the writer has conceived a new world, it also exhibits that the writer is fed up with the present situation of the world. This novel grieves on the erosion of our values and traditions, but it also awakens hope. It invites us towards the formation of a society in which there is no role of criminals, terrorists, robbers, and politicians. It proposes a place where people don’t fall for evil, but if they do they can resolve it among themselves. This novel has presented a city where with planning the inhabitants have relieved themselves from the troubles that were swamping them.

Perhaps there may be a city somewhere in the world where there are no terrorists capering the city, no face changing politicians impersonating as leaders, no selfish, immoral, and distressed people. The writer has envisioned a place far from the inanity, brutality, distress, terror, and deception. The writer also gives the guidelines to the people of struggling Pakistan on how to realize such a place which leads to peace and prosperity with dignity. The beauty of this novel is that all these ideas move elegantly with the story in a manner that does not feel like that the author is preaching or campaigning.

Before the writer begins the story, he blatantly expresses his views on the current situation of Pakistan in Hal Giya Ahewal Giya (حال گیا احوال گیا) and opens up a debate on the role of democracy.

Naya Nagar Basa Liya Hum Ne (نیا نگر بسا لیا ہم نے) is a successful novel and full of effects (تاثرات) that takes the reader out of the darkness of hopelessness and brings them to the light of optimism.

His Panic
Since his infamous confrontation with Bill O’Reilly on The O’Reilly Factor, Emmy® award winner Geraldo Rivera has examined what makes the issue of illegal Hispanic immigration so complex. With widespread fury and frustration directed at Hispanics, the nation’s largest minority, this may be the single most divisive issue in America today— with some citizens blaming illegal immigrants for everything from terrorism to the spread of disease and the loss of jobs.

With unbiased analysis, Rivera exposes the hypocrisy, racism, and ignorance behind anti-immigration sentiments, from both extremists and otherwise ordinary Americans.

An unflinching look at one of today’s biggest issues— and a vital contribution to the ongoing debate—His Panic is destined to reshape the way Americans view the future of this country.

The Cat's Table
In the early 1950s, an 11-year-old boy in Colombo boards a ship bound for England. At mealtimes he is seated at the “cat’s table”—as far from the Captain’s Table as can be—with a ragtag group of “insignificant” adults and two other boys, Cassius and Ramadhin. As the ship makes its way across the Indian Ocean, through the Suez Canal, into the Mediterranean, the boys tumble from one adventure to another, bursting all over the place like freed mercury.

But there are other diversions as well: One man talks with them about jazz and women, another opens the door to the world of literature. The narrator’s elusive, beautiful cousin Emily becomes his confidante, allowing him to see himself “with a distant eye” for the first time, and to feel the first stirring of desire. Another cat’s table denizen, the shadowy Miss Lasqueti, is perhaps more than what she seems. And very late every night, the boys spy on a shackled prisoner, his crime and his fate a galvanizing mystery that will haunt them forever.

As the narrative moves between the decks and holds of the ship and the boy’s adult years, it tells a spellbinding story—by turns poignant and electrifying—about the magical, often forbidden discoveries of childhood and a lifelong journey that begins unexpectedly with a spectacular sea voyage.

The Sisters Brothers: A Novel
Hermann Kermit Warm is going to die. The enigmatic and powerful man known only as the Commodore has ordered it, and his henchmen, Eli and Charlie Sisters, will make sure of it.

Though Eli doesn't share his brother's appetite for whiskey and killing, he's never known anything else.

But their prey isn't an easy mark, and on the road from Oregon City to Warm's gold-mining claim outside Sacramento, Eli begins to question what he does for a living–and whom he does it for.

With The Sisters Brothers, Patrick deWitt pays homage to the classic Western, transforming it into an unforgettable comic tour de force. Filled with a remarkable cast of characters–losers, cheaters, and ne'er-do-wells from all stripes of life–and told by a complex and compelling narrator, it is a violent, lustful odyssey through the underworld of the 1850s frontier that beautifully captures the humor, melancholy, and grit of the Old West and two brothers bound by blood, violence, and love.

Download : Lost Memory of Skin by Russell Banks

Lost Memory of Skin: A Novel
The acclaimed author of The Sweet Hereafter and Rule of the Bone returns with a provocative new novel that illuminates the shadowed edges of contemporary American culture with startling and unforgettable results

Suspended in a strangely modern-day version of limbo, the young man at the center of Russell Banks’s uncompromising and morally complex new novel must create a life for himself in the wake of incarceration. Known in his new identity only as the Kid, and on probation after doing time for a liaison with an underage girl, he is shackled to a GPS monitoring device and forbidden to live within 2,500 feet of anywhere children might gather. With nowhere else to go, the Kid takes up residence under a south Florida causeway, in a makeshift encampment with other convicted sex offenders.

Barely beyond childhood himself, the Kid, despite his crime, is in many ways an innocent, trapped by impulses and foolish choices he himself struggles to comprehend. Enter the Professor, a man who has built his own life on secrets and lies. A university sociologist of enormous size and intellect, he finds in the Kid the perfect subject for his research on homelessness and recidivism among convicted sex offenders. The two men forge a tentative partnership, the Kid remaining wary of the Professor’s motives even as he accepts the counsel and financial assistance of the older man.

When the camp beneath the causeway is raided by the police, and later, when a hurricane all but destroys the settlement, the Professor tries to help the Kid in practical matters while trying to teach his young charge new ways of looking at, and understanding, what he has done. But when the Professor’s past resurfaces and threatens to destroy his carefully constructed world, the balance in the two men’s relationship shifts.

Suddenly, the Kid must reconsider everything he has come to believe, and choose what course of action to take when faced with a new kind of moral decision.

Long one of our most acute and insightful novelists, Russell Banks often examines the indistinct boundaries between our intentions and actions. A mature and masterful work of contemporary fiction from one of our most accomplished storytellers, Lost Memory of Skin unfolds in language both powerful and beautifully lyrical, show-casing Banks at his most compelling, his reckless sense of humor and intense empathy at full bore.

The perfect convergence of writer and subject, Lost Memory of Skin probes the zeitgeist of a troubled society where zero tolerance has erased any hope of subtlety and compassion—a society where isolating the offender has perhaps created a new kind of victim.

Download : The Lover's Dictionary by David Levithan

The Lover's Dictionary: A Novel
There has to be a moment at the beginning when you wonder whether you’re in love with the person or in love with the feeling of love itself.

If the moment doesn’t pass, that’s it—you’re done. And if the moment does pass, it never goes that far. It stands in the distance, ready for whenever you want it back. Sometimes it’s even there when you thought you were searching for something else, like an escape route, or your lover’s face.

How does one talk about love? Do we even have the right words to describe something that can be both utterly mundane and completely transcendent, pulling us out of our everyday lives and making us feel a part of something greater than ourselves? Taking a unique approach to this problem, the nameless narrator of David Levithan’s The Lover’s Dictionary has constructed the story of his relationship as a dictionary. Through these short entries, he provides an intimate window into the great events and quotidian trifles of being within a couple, giving us an indelible and deeply moving portrait of love in our time.

In his first book for adults, popular young-adult novelist David Levithan creates a beautifully crafted exploration of the insecurities, tenderness, anger, and contented comfort that make romantic relationships so compelling (or devastating). Through sparingly written, alphabetical entries that defy chronology in defining a love affair, The Lover’s Dictionary packs an emotional wallop.

For "breathtaking (adj.)," the unnamed narrator explains, "Those moments when we kiss and surrender for an hour before we say a single word." For "exacerbate (v.)," he notes, "I believe your exact words were: 'You’re getting too emotional.'" Ranging from over a page to as short as "celibacy (n.), n/a," the definitions-as-storyline alternate between heart-wrenching and humorous--certainly an achievement for a book structured more like Webster’s than a traditional novel. Proving that enduring characters and conflict trump word count, Levithan’s poignant vignettes and emotional candor will remind readers that sometimes in both fiction and life, less is truly more--and the personal details of love can be remarkably universal.

The Night Circus
The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway—a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love—a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.

True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead.

Written in rich, seductive prose, this spell-casting novel is a feast for the senses and the heart.

Erin Morgenstern’s dark, enchanting debut takes us to the black and white tents of Le Cirque des Reves, a circus that arrives without warning, simply appearing when yesterday it was not there. Young Celia and Marco have been cast into a rivalry at The Night Circus, one arranged long ago by powers they do not fully understand. Over time, their lives become more intricately enmeshed in a dance of love, joy, deceit, heartbreak, and magic. Author Morgenstern knows her world inside and out, and she guides the reader with a confident hand. The setting and tone are never less than mesmerizing. The characters are well-realized and memorable. But it is the Night Circus itself that might be the most memorable of all.

The Tiger's Wife: A Novel
In a Balkan country mending from war, Natalia, a young doctor, is compelled to unravel the mysterious circumstances surrounding her beloved grandfather’s recent death. Searching for clues, she turns to his worn copy of The Jungle Book and the stories he told her of his encounters over the years with “the deathless man.” But most extraordinary of all is the story her grandfather never told her—the legend of the tiger’s wife.

The sometimes crushing power of myth, story, and memory is explored in the brilliant debut of Obreht, the youngest of the New Yorker's 20-under-40. Natalia Stefanovi, a doctor living (and, in between suspensions, practicing) in an unnamed country that's a ringer for Obreht's native Croatia, crosses the border in search of answers about the death of her beloved grandfather, who raised her on tales from the village he grew up in, and where, following German bombardment in 1941, a tiger escaped from the zoo in a nearby city and befriended a mysterious deaf-mute woman.

The evolving story of the tiger's wife, as the deaf-mute becomes known, forms one of three strands that sustain the novel, the other two being Natalia's efforts to care for orphans and a wayward family who, to lift a curse, are searching for the bones of a long-dead relative; and several of her grandfather's stories about Gavran Gailé, the deathless man, whose appearances coincide with catastrophe and who may hold the key to all the stories that ensnare Natalia. Obreht is an expert at depicting history through aftermath, people through the love they inspire, and place through the stories that endure; the reflected world she creates is both immediately recognizable and a legend in its own right. Obreht is talented far beyond her years, and her unsentimental faith in language, dream, and memory is a pleasure.

The Marriage Plot: A Novel
It’s the early 1980s—the country is in a deep recession, and life after college is harder than ever. In the cafés on College Hill, the wised-up kids are inhaling Derrida and listening to Talking Heads. But Madeleine Hanna, dutiful English major, is writing her senior thesis on Jane Austen and George Eliot, purveyors of the marriage plot that lies at the heart of the greatest English novels.

As Madeleine tries to understand why “it became laughable to read writers like Cheever and Updike, who wrote about the suburbia Madeleine and most of her friends had grown up in, in favor of reading the Marquis de Sade, who wrote about deflowering virgins in eighteenth-century France,” real life, in the form of two very different guys, intervenes. Leonard Bankhead—charismatic loner, college Darwinist, and lost Portland boy—suddenly turns up in a semiotics seminar, and soon Madeleine finds herself in a highly charged erotic and intellectual relationship with him. At the same time, her old “friend” Mitchell Grammaticus—who’s been reading Christian mysticism and generally acting strange—resurfaces, obsessed with the idea that Madeleine is destined to be his mate.

Over the next year, as the members of the triangle in this amazing, spellbinding novel graduate from college and enter the real world, events force them to reevaluate everything they learned in school. Leonard and Madeleine move to a biology Laboratory on Cape Cod, but can’t escape the secret responsible for Leonard’s seemingly inexhaustible energy and plunging moods. And Mitchell, traveling around the world to get Madeleine out of his mind, finds himself face-to-face with ultimate questions about the meaning of life, the existence of God, and the true nature of love.

Are the great love stories of the nineteenth century dead? Or can there be a new story, written for today and alive to the realities of feminism, sexual freedom, prenups, and divorce? With devastating wit and an abiding understanding of and affection for his characters, Jeffrey Eugenides revives the motivating energies of the Novel, while creating a story so contemporary and fresh that it reads like the intimate journal of our own lives.
